Comparison of powdered enamel sample pretreatment methods for strontium isotope analysis

چکیده

Most researchers assume minimal impact of pretreatment on strontium isotope ratios ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) for bones and teeth, methods vary tremendously. We compared 14 methods, including no prep other than powdering enamel, ashing, soaking in water, an oxidizing agent (bleach or hydrogen peroxide) acetic acid (0.1 M, 1.0 M buffered with calcium acetate), a combination these steps. prepared analyzed aliquots powdered molar enamel from three proboscideans (one modern captive Indian elephant, Elephas maximus indicus ; one Pleistocene mastodon, Mammut americanum Miocene gomphothere, Afrochoerodon kisumuensis ). Each was performed triplicate we measured Sr, Sr concentration, uranium (U) using the same lab space instrumentation all samples. Variability U concentrations considerable across pretreatments. Mean ranged 0.70999 to 0.71029 tooth, 0.71458 0.71502 0.70804 0.70817 tooth. The tooth contained least negligible U. slightly more measurable amounts U, had approximately 5x For variance concentrations, among replicates statistically indistinguishable pretreatments, but there were apparent differences pretreatments teeth. Both relatively little it is possible that small exogenous reagents, building materials dust affected some median varied considerably (but insignificantly) variability also considerable; distinct obvious patterns methods. much smaller, significant yielded comparable to, lower than, untreated powder, suggesting selective removal material high Sr. Further evaluation mechanisms driving isotopic both within warranted. Researchers should clearly report their avoid combining data obtained different Small could interpretations, especially areas where low.

Passports from the past: Investigating human dispersals using strontium isotope analysis of tooth enamel.

Strontium isotopes are a powerful tool which provide information about provenance directly from the tissues of humans rather than the grave context and burial goods. Geographical variation in strontium isotopes is primarily controlled by the underlying geology but there are many other factors that need to be considered before migratory individuals can be identified. Consequently, despite many s...

Comparison of sample preparation methods for stable isotope analysis of dissolved sulphate in forested watersheds.

Pretreatment methods for measuring stable sulphur (δ(34)S) and oxygen (δ(18)O) isotope ratios of dissolved sulphate from watersheds have evolved throughout the last few decades. The current study evaluated if there are differences in the measured stable S and O isotope values of dissolved sulphate from forested watersheds when pretreated using three different methods: Method 1 (M1): adsorb sulp...

Application of Strontium Isotope Analysis of Bone and Tooth in the Study of Ancient Immigrations

One of the important questions of archaeology is the study of the mobility and immigration of human groups. A common method for addressing these issues is to refer to the artifacts and archaeological findings left behind by the earlier cultures and to compare the forms, motifs, and production methods used among various ancient cultures, and hence, to explore the relationships and cultural excha...

Preparation of Large Quantities of Powdered Enamel.

Powdered enamel of extracted human teeth has been used in the estimation of the activity of anticaries agents (S. D. GERSHON, 0. W. NEIDITCH, and R. H. C. LEE, Proc. Toilet Goods Ass., 28:14-17, 1957), as well as a number of studies with a direct or indirect relation to this activity. Correlation of results with different samples of enamel has been difficult because of the numerous variables. I...
